System Monitor is an application for the menu bar of Mac OS X, designed to inform you unobtrusively about the activity of your computer. You can retrieve up-to-date technical data any time, like process load, main memory consumption, storage space, disk activity, communication on network interfaces, etc. The Mac OS X Activity Monitor helps graphically identify applications or processes consuming abnormal memory and CPU levels. Activity Monitor is located within the Utilities folder within.
When your system is acting sluggish or simply not responding, an app or process may be the source of the problem. You can use Activity Monitor to locate the troublesome app or process and force it to quit.
